SILENT PROTEST

SILENT PROTEST

Edmonton - 2003 - As the founder of the Edmonton chapter of the anti-violence protest group Women In Black, Janice Williamson's most important contribution is staying silent. The women, mostly in middle age or later years, attend rallies garbed in the colours of mourning and refuse to speak as a show of solidarity with victims of violence. The international movement got its start when Israeli and Palestinian women began working together in Jerusalem in 1988 to protest the Israeli government's treatment of people in the Palestinian territories.
